Banana flowers are used to make yummy chutney and tambli. Makes a heavenly lunch, when the chutney, tambli is had with a bowl of steaming hot rice and with congee. They aid removal of kidney stones they say. Banana flowers/blossoms are called bondi in Konkani.
Steps to make Banana Flower Chutney:
- I used 3 inner petals near to heart of the banana blossom. Wash and chop the petals.
- In a kadhai take water, 1/2 tsp turmeric powder and 1 tsp salt.
- Add the chopped petals and boil for 5 minutes. Drain the water and keep aside.
- In a pan heat 3 tsp oil and add urad dal and chana dal, and 2 dried chilli. Roast on low flame till it turns aromatic.
- Add chopped and boiled petal pieces, grated coconut, and tamarind. I have taken tamarind and jaggery pickle which was added to the chutney mix ingredients.
- Fry for a minute on low flame and then switch off the flame. Allow to cool.
- Transfer to a blender and make a smooth paste by adding required water.6u
- Add the tempering.
- Banana flower chutney is ready to be enjoyed with hot steamed rice/idlis.
